DIY Tip of the day: Flowers

F L O W E R S.

Happy Monday everyone! Our DIY tip of the day is all about flowers…. specifically, the flower market.

If you live in the LA region you are in luck, because not only is the flower market a super fun experience, but a reliable floral source year-round. I would suggest taking a trip with a couple of girlfriends one morning to look around and find out what types of flowers you like. Get as many details as you can and take lots of pictures! You can even begin negotiating with vendors to get your costs down. This way whether you pick up the flowers yourself or if you delegate this task you have the intel you need to get everything you need.

Here are a few tips for when you are ready to head downtown and pick up your flowers:

1.     Bring Cash. Cash is handy for parking, market entry fee ($2 on weekdays, $1 on Saturdays) and for ease of transactions within the market. Most venders will accept a card but it’s easier to negotiate prices with cash and sometimes when you use your card at multiple small outlets it flags an alarm with your bank (depending on their security protocol). I would suggest keeping things simple with cash.

2.     Bring a few buckets. Throw a few buckets (or small trash cans) into your car and fill them with an inch or two of water before you head downtown. When you return to your car with the flowers simply stick then in the buckets for easy transport and storage when you get back home.

3.     Don’t forget other essential items. While you are down at the flower market don’t forget to stop by one of the surrounding shops and grab other essential floral items such as floral tape and floral wire. You will need these to make the bouquets.

4.     Bring some extra hands. Grab a friend or two to come along. You will need help carrying items back to your car. So, grab a buddy, some coffee and make a morning out of it!

5.     Have fun! The flower market is so much fun! I mean, how could it not be? the place is full of life and beautiful flowers!

Arranging bouquets and center pieces is a very creative/fun activity you can schedule into your wedding weekend. Or consider asking some of your favorites Aunties if this would be something they would enjoy doing! In a coming post, we will talk more about tips for putting together arrangements. But first stop, the flower market!
